The monastery is located in the narrow pass of Klisoura, roughly 30 kilometers from the city of Kastoria. The journey through the alpine terrain is spectacular, and you will find the site accessible by car or taxi.

• Parking: Ample parking is available immediately outside the main gate.

• Accessibility: A short, gentle stroll along a stone-paved path leads to the entrance.

• Permits: No special permit is required for your visit.

• Time Needed: A complete and peaceful visit usually requires about 1 to 2 hours.

History and Spiritual Significance

The monastery’s history is a testament to the endurance of faith. While its roots reach back to the Byzantine era, the present structure is largely a product of the 19th century.

• Founding Story: Local tradition recounts that the site was revealed to the faithful through the miraculous discovery of an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary, which inspired the construction of this refuge.

• Patron Saint: The monastery is dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos.

• Miraculous Relics: It is the resting place of the relics of the saintly ascetic Sofia of Klisoura, who draws countless pilgrims seeking healing and intercession.

Guidelines for Pilgrims

When you enter this sacred space, you are entering a living home of prayer. Please be mindful of the "quiet hours," particularly in the early afternoon, when the sisterhood observes time for private prayer and rest.

• Dress Code: We ask that you dress with reverence. Women should wear skirts that cover the knees and blouses with sleeves; men should wear long trousers and shirts.

• Behavior: Please keep conversations to a soft whisper to preserve the stillness.

• Photography: Photography is strictly prohibited within the church to protect the sanctity of the space. For exterior photos, please ask a sister for a blessing first.

• Donations: While there is no entrance fee, a small, voluntary donation is a beautiful way to support the monastery’s maintenance.

Services and Facilities

You are welcome to join the sisters in their daily services. Please be aware that there is no public guesthouse on the premises; most visitors choose to stay in the nearby village of Klisoura or the city of Kastoria.

• Daily Services: Matins and the Divine Liturgy typically occur in the early morning; Vespers are held in the late afternoon.

• Monastery Shop: A small shop offers hand-painted icons, incense, and local products crafted by the sisters.

• Feast Day: The major celebration occurs on September 8th, featuring the Great Liturgy and a gathering of pilgrims from across Greece.
