Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Makellaria): Jewel of Achaea

Dearest pilgrim, receive a most blessed and reverent welcome! I am deeply honored to guide you to the ancient and powerful sanctuary of the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, universally known as Makellaria. Perched dramatically on a vast rock face overlooking the gorge of the River Selinountas, this monastery, often called the "Meteora of the Peloponnese," is one of the oldest and most historically charged religious monuments in all of Greece. Its foundation is linked to profound atonement and its name to a tragic massacre, making a visit here a journey through both divine light and national sacrifice. May the grace of the Mother of God, who watches over this place, bring you peace.

Essential Information for Pilgrims

Your visit to this venerable, active convent should be conducted with profound reverence, respecting the long spiritual history and the current life of the sisterhood.

Opening Hours & Quiet Hours

The Holy Monastery of Makellaria is an active nuns' convent dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. It is generally open to pilgrims for visitation daily, with the exception of certain days for spiritual reasons (some sources suggest it may be closed on Mondays). Typical opening hours are usually from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM and then again in the afternoon, often from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. The essential quiet hour (Hesychia) is strictly observed in the mid-afternoon, typically from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Silence must be maintained on the grounds, especially during these hours.

Dress Code

A traditional and strict modest dress code is mandatory for all pilgrims, honoring the sanctity of the centuries of prayer offered here.

  • Shoulders, arms, and knees must be fully covered.

  • For men: Long trousers and sleeved shirts are necessary.

  • For women: Long skirts or dresses and tops with sleeves are required, and covering the head with a scarf is customary and expected. The nuns are very hospitable and often provide scarves or wraparound skirts at the entrance to ensure all can enter reverently.

Exact Location & How to Get There

The monastery is located approximately 30 kilometers from the town of Kalavryta, near the village of Lapanagoi, in the regional unit of Achaea, Peloponnese. It is built on a commanding rock above the River Selinountas gorge. The best way to reach the monastery is by car from Kalavryta or the coastal road. The drive involves scenic, winding mountain roads, and the approach offers breathtaking views.

Parking Availability & Walking Distance

Free parking is available in a designated area near the monastery complex. The walking distance from the parking area to the main church is short and easily accessible along a paved path.

Whether a Permit is Required

A special entry permit is not required for general visitation.

Patron Saint & Spiritual Story

The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (The Mother of God). Its original name was Panagia tis Lithostrotiotissa (Virgin Mary of the Stone-Paved/Built on Rock).

  • The Miraculous Icon: The spiritual story focuses on the miraculous finding of the monastery's most sacred treasure: an Icon of the Virgin Mary and an earthen jar with miraculous oil, found hidden within the rock during one of its rebuildings. Tradition holds that the construction materials for a later rebuild were moved supernaturally to the present site, marking the will of the Mother of God.

  • The Miraculous Gaze: The miraculous icon of the Panagia is famed because, wherever the pilgrim stands in the church, Her eyes are perceived to be turned toward him or her.

Founding Date & Historical Significance

The Holy Monastery of Makellaria is historically one of the oldest in the Peloponnese, with its foundation credited to the Byzantine General Velissarios in 532 AD.

  • Act of Atonement: An inscription, believed to be more recent than the founding itself, suggests General Velissarios built the monastery as an act of atonement for the brutal massacre of rebels during the infamous Nika Revolt in Constantinople in that same year, under Emperor Justinian.

  • The Name: The monastery’s current name, Makellaria, derives from the tragic event when the Ottomans massacred the monks and refugees sheltering there during the Ottoman conquest of 1458. The name comes from the Italian macellio, meaning massacre. The monastery was later rebuilt and played a role as a spiritual center and refuge during the Greek War of Independence. Since 2011, it has been active as a women's monastery.

Important Icons, Relics or Miraculous Items

The most priceless spiritual treasure is the Miraculous Icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary) mentioned above, which is highly revered for its compassionate, following gaze and its survival through destruction. The monastery also preserves:

  • The Earthen Jar with Miraculous Oil: Found during the construction and believed to contain miraculous oil, this jar is a unique relic.

  • Weapons of the 1821 Fighters: Historical weapons used by the Greek fighters who successfully defended the area against Ibrahim Pasha in 1827 are kept here.

  • Precious Relics: While some important relics were tragically stolen in a robbery in 1980, the monastery still preserves other precious icons and religious artifacts.

Number of Monks/Nuns Currently Living There

The monastery is currently a thriving women's monastic community and is cared for by a small but dedicated community of nuns (known as Monaches or Gerontisses).

Level of Hospitality & Whether Conversations are Allowed

The level of hospitality (Filoxenia) is offered with warmth and spiritual simplicity by the sisterhood. Quiet conversation is allowed when addressed to one of the nuns for a blessing, spiritual advice, or specific inquiries. All interactions must be conducted with respect, in a hushed tone, and with brevity.

Guesthouse Availability & Reservation Needs

Guesthouse availability for foreign pilgrims is generally limited due to the small size of the convent. Accommodation is prioritized for pilgrims on deep spiritual missions or those requiring a short stay for healing prayers. You should secure lodging in nearby Kalavryta.

Participation in Liturgies or Services

Pilgrims are warmly welcomed to participate in the liturgical services, especially the Divine Liturgy held on Sundays and Feast Days. Attending the morning service is a beautiful way to experience the monastery’s spiritual life.

Days and Hours of Services

The schedule of Days and hours of services is posted locally. The Divine Liturgy is always celebrated on Sunday mornings and on all major feast days. The community also celebrates daily services, often beginning very early in the morning.

Entrance Fee or Recommended Donation

There is no mandatory entrance fee to enter the monastery. A voluntary recommended donation is customary and deeply appreciated, supporting the sisterhood and the preservation of the ancient structure.

Photography Rules

Photography is strictly forbidden inside the main church (Catholicon) and inside the private monastic buildings and cells. Respectful exterior photos of the unique architecture and the stunning views of the Selinountas Gorge are permitted.

Monastery Shop & Products

The monastery maintains a small shop where pilgrims can purchase simple, traditional monastic products such as small icons of the Panagia Makellaria, incense, candles, and perhaps items made by the nuns.

Total Time Needed for a Complete Visit

Allow approximately one hour for a complete, reverent visit, including time to venerate the Holy Icon and the jar of oil, and to reflect on the site's historical significance.

Nearby Chapels, Paths, Viewpoints or Landmarks

  • Chapel of the Transfiguration: A short path leads to the small, nearby Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, which is built in a small cave and is known for a source of Holy Water that flows continuously from the rock.

  • River Selinountas: The gorge below provides beautiful natural scenery.

  • Kalavryta: The nearby town is a major historical and memorial site.

Behaviour Rules for Visitors

Pilgrims must strictly adhere to the dress code, maintain silence within the church and holy areas, avoid loud conversation, silence all mobile phones, and respect the ancient and tragic history of the site.

Feast Day and What Happens During the Celebration

The major Feast Day of the monastery is the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15th). Other important days of celebration include the Synaxis of the Holy Icon (August 23rd) and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14th).

  • Celebration: The August 15th commemoration is a high point of the year, drawing large crowds of pilgrims. It is marked by a Great Hierarchical Vespers on the eve and a magnificent Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on the day, celebrated with great solemnity and devotion to honor the Mother of God.

May the light and miraculous protection of the Panagia Makellaria guide your path and bless your life.
