Welcome to the gentle hills of Leros. As a guide dedicated to the spiritual beauty of the Dodecanese, it is my privilege to invite you to the Monastery of the Ascension (Analipsi), a sacred retreat that offers a profound sense of connection between the earth and the heavens. Perched in a tranquil landscape, this monastery is a testament to the island’s long-standing devotion and the quiet, persistent rhythm of monastic life.
The monastery is located in a quiet, elevated area of Leros, providing a serene environment away from the coastal bustle. To reach this sanctuary, you will follow the winding, scenic roads that reveal the island’s lush inland beauty. You may easily reach the site by private car or taxi, and you will find convenient parking on-site. From your vehicle, a short, meditative walk along a stone path brings you to the gates of the monastery. No special permit is required for your visit; all who come with a spirit of respect and peace are welcome.
The monastery is dedicated to the Ascension of our Lord, a feast that celebrates the moment Christ ascended into heaven, reminding us of our own spiritual journey toward the divine. The history of this site is deeply woven into the local identity, reflecting the resilience and faith of the people of Leros. While the roots of the monastery reach back centuries, it has served for generations as a pillar of spiritual support for the islanders, particularly during times of hardship. Local tradition suggests the site was established by a group of devout individuals who sought to create a refuge where the liturgical life could flourish undisturbed. Today, the monastery stands as a living witness to that heritage, maintained by a small, humble community of nuns.
When you enter this sacred space, you are stepping into a home of prayer. To ensure the sanctity of the monastery remains undisturbed, we kindly ask that you be mindful of the "quiet hours"—typically in the early afternoon—when the sisters are engaged in their private devotions and rest.
Regarding your attire, please dress with modesty. Women should wear skirts that cover the knees and blouses that cover the shoulders, while men should wear long trousers and shirts. To preserve the stillness of the environment, please keep your conversations to a soft, respectful whisper. If you meet any of the sisters, a polite, silent nod is the traditional and most appropriate way to greet them.
Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main church to protect the holiness of the interior and the sacred icons. If you wish to capture the architecture of the courtyards or the stunning mountain views, it is always a kind gesture to ask for a blessing from a sister first. There is no entrance fee for your visit, though a small, voluntary donation is deeply appreciated, as it helps support the monastery’s upkeep and its charitable work.
You are warmly invited to participate in the monastic services, which are the heartbeat of the site. Matins and the Divine Liturgy generally occur in the early morning, while Vespers take place in the late afternoon. Please note that there is no public guesthouse on the premises for overnight stays, so most pilgrims arrange their accommodation in the nearby villages or the main port, which offer a variety of comfortable options.
A complete visit to the monastery typically takes between one to two hours, allowing you ample time to light a candle, venerate the holy icons, and sit in reflection within the peaceful gardens. Before you depart, do visit the small monastery shop, where you can find religious icons, traditional incense, and artisanal products crafted by the sisters.
As you explore the surrounding area, you will find quiet paths that offer sweeping views of the Leros landscape—perfect spots for contemplation. The monastery’s feast day is a time of immense communal joy, characterized by solemn liturgical services that draw the faithful from all across the island. May your visit to the Monastery of the Ascension be a journey that brings you deep inner peace and leaves you refreshed for the road ahead.
