Dearest pilgrim, receive a most blessed and glorious welcome! I am truly honored to guide you to the universally celebrated sanctuary of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Eikosifinissa. This monastery is arguably the most famous and historically significant pilgrimage site in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, often referred to simply as Eikosifinissa. Dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos (Mother of God), this site is renowned for its miraculous icon and its centuries-long role as a spiritual fortress for Orthodoxy in the region.
Your visit to this venerable, active monastic community requires profound reverence and deep respect for the Mother of God, the site’s turbulent history, and the spiritual discipline of the resident community.
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Eikosifinissa is a large and active nuns' convent. Its schedule is meticulously maintained to balance the duties of prayer and hospitality to the thousands of pilgrims who visit yearly.
Daily Visitation: Visitors are generally welcomed during specific hours. Expect the monastery to be open in the morning, often from nine in the morning until one in the afternoon, and then again in the late afternoon, typically from four in the afternoon until six in the evening (or sunset).
Quiet Hour (Hesychia): A strict period of quiet hour and seclusion is maintained in the mid-afternoon, generally between one in the afternoon and four in the afternoon. Pilgrims must ensure absolute silence on the grounds during this window.
A traditional and strict modest dress code is mandatory for all pilgrims. Shoulders, arms, and knees must be fully and modestly covered for all visitors. For gentlemen, this requires long trousers and sleeved shirts. For ladies, long skirts or dresses and sleeved tops are essential, and out of deep respect, women are expected to cover their heads with a scarf upon entering the Catholikon (main church).
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Eikosifinissa is located in the beautiful, mountainous region that separates the provinces of Drama and Serres, often identified as being near the city of Drama but geographically situated on the northern slope of Mount Pangaion. It is best accessed by private or rental car from Drama or Serres, following the well-maintained provincial roads and the excellent signage for the Moni Panagias Eikosifinissas. Its remote, elevated position contributes to its sense of seclusion and sanctity.
Parking availability is ample and usually well-organized in a designated area outside the main gates to accommodate the large number of pilgrims, especially during feast days. The monastery complex is situated close to the parking area, and the walking distance to the main entrance and the Catholikon is very short and easily accessible.
The monastery is dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos (Panagia). The unique name, Eikosifinissa (literally, "Twenty Figures"), is linked to the miraculous origin of its most important icon. The spiritual story focuses on the Mother of God's miraculous intervention, protection, and boundless grace, making the monastery a powerful center for healing and comfort.
The foundation of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Eikosifinissa is one of the oldest in the region, with its roots traced back to the fifth century (circa four hundred and fifty AD).
The Story of Saint Germanos and the Icon: The traditional story holds that the monastery was founded by Saint Germanos, a disciple of Saint John Chrysostom. During a mission to the region, Saint Germanos prayed fervently for an icon to be painted without human hands. Miraculously, the icon of the Panagia was impressed upon a piece of wood, shining with light. Its miraculous nature was said to include twenty small figures miraculously depicted around the Virgin, hence the name Eikosifinissa.
Role as a National Beacon: The monastery flourished during the Byzantine period but faced destruction and revival over the centuries, especially enduring the long period of Ottoman rule, serving as a powerful, national, and spiritual beacon for the Orthodox Greeks of Macedonia and Thrace. Its immense historical importance lies in its role as a spiritual fortress, which preserved Christian culture and learning in the darkest times.
The most sacred treasure of the monastery is the Miraculous and Acheiropoietos (Not Made by Human Hands) Icon of Panagia Eikosifinissa. This icon is the focus of intense veneration and is associated with countless miracles of healing and intervention. The monastery is also the historical holder of Holy Relics of various saints, which are presented for veneration.
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Eikosifinissa is a large and active nuns' convent. It is home to a numerous and dedicated sisterhood who maintain the rigorous prayer schedule and the monastery's vital spiritual and social work.
The level of hospitality (Filoxenia) is renowned across Greece, offered with great warmth and structured simplicity. Quiet conversation is allowed when addressed to the Abbess or a designated sister for a blessing, spiritual advice, or necessary inquiries. All interactions must be brief, respectful, and conducted in a hushed tone, honoring the monastic silence.
Due to the large number of pilgrims, the monastery has guesthouse facilities available, offering simple, traditional, and spiritually supportive accommodation. Reservations are absolutely necessary, especially around feast days, and should be made well in advance directly with the monastery secretariat.
Pilgrims are warmly welcomed to participate in all liturgical services, particularly the Divine Liturgy and the services of the Supplicatory Canon (Paraklesis) to the Panagia.
The schedule of Days and hours of services is posted locally. The Divine Liturgy is always celebrated on Sunday mornings and on all major feast days. The community maintains an extensive cycle of daily services, often beginning very early in the morning.
There is no mandatory entrance fee to enter the monastery. A voluntary recommended donation is customary and deeply appreciated, supporting the numerous sisterhood and the extensive needs of this ancient, historic complex.
Photography is strictly forbidden inside the main church (Catholikon), especially towards the Miraculous Icon and relics, and inside the private monastic buildings and cells. This rule is rigorously enforced to maintain reverence. Respectful exterior photos of the courtyards and the magnificent mountain views are generally permitted.
The monastery maintains an excellent shop. Here, pilgrims can purchase traditional monastic products such as replicas of the Holy Icon, handmade ecclesiastical items, prayer ropes, icons, candles, and high-quality local products produced by the nuns, often including honey, herbal remedies, and preserves.
Allow approximately one hour and a half to two hours for a complete, reverent visit. This provides sufficient time to venerate the Holy Icon, light a candle, tour the courtyards, and visit the monastery shop.
The Crypt: Remains or features related to the founding activities of Saint Germanos may be nearby.
Mount Pangaion: The surrounding mountain area offers incredible viewpoints and hiking paths.
Drama and Serres: The major regional cities offer extensive historical sites and amenities.
Pilgrims must strictly adhere to the dress code; maintain silence and deep respect within the church and holy areas; avoid loud conversation; silence all mobile phones; and respect the privacy and peaceful life of the sisterhood.
The major Feast Day of the monastery is the commemoration of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Koimisis tis Theotokou), celebrated annually on August the fifteenth.
Celebration: This day is one of the twelve great feasts of the Church and is the culmination of a two-week period of fasting and prayer. The celebration is marked by a Great Vespers on the eve followed by a magnificent Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on August the fifteenth. The celebration draws tens of thousands of pilgrims from across Greece and the Balkans, often involving a grand procession of the Holy Icon. The atmosphere is one of immense faith, spiritual fervor, and communal devotion.
May the miraculous grace and protection of Panagia Eikosifinissa bless your pilgrimage and grant you solace.
